Italy: Flight suspension in effect at Catania-Fontanarossa Airport in Sicily until 20:00 Aug. 14 following fresh eruption at Mount Etna /update 1

Authorities suspend flights at Catania-Fontanarossa Airport in Sicily, Italy, until 20:00 Aug. 14 due to eruption at Mount Etna.

Warning

Event

Officials at Catania-Fontanarossa Airport (CTA) in Sicily announced the closure of its airspace and suspension of all flights until at least 20:00 Aug. 14 following a fresh eruption at Mount Etna volcano. Local authorities also introduced a 48-hour ban for two-wheeled vehicles and the imposition of a 30 km/h (19 mph) speed limit in the metropolitan area of Catania due to the presence of ash on the ground.

Lingering disruptions are likely after regular flight operations resume as airlines work to clear passenger backlogs. Authorities could extend the closure with little notice, especially if additional eruptions occur. Urban transport disruptions are likely.

Advice

Confirm flights at CTA through at least early Aug. 15. Do not check out of accommodation before confirming onward travel.
