France: Activists plan protest convoy from Sainte-Soline to Paris, Aug. 18-27

Activists plan a protest convoy across west-central France, Aug. 18-27; increased security, localized disruptions likely.

Informational

Event

Activists plan a protest convey against the development of "mega bassins" (water reservoirs for agricultural land), Aug. 18-27. The convoy will start in Lezay, near to Sainte-Soline, in Deux Sevres department, on Aug. 18, and will continue on a series of steps toward Paris where it will finish on Aug. 26-27. The convoy will include slow-moving tractors, cyclists, and other protesters. The convoy will travel via the following centers:

  • Aug. 18: Lezay to Jazeneuil

  • Aug. 19: Migne-Auxances, Coussay-les-Bois

  • Aug. 22: Tours

  • Aug. 23: Blois

  • Aug. 25: Orleans

  • Aug. 26-27: Paris

Additional police will likely deploy to monitor the convoy. Slow-moving vehicles and associated security measures, including possible road closures and movement restrictions, will likely prompt localized transport and business disruptions in the surrounding areas. Clashes are possible between police and protesters.

Context

In March, up to 30,000 protesters took part in a series of demonstrations in Sainte-Soline. Up to 3,000 police were deployed, and clashes between police and protesters left over 200 injured. A number of police vehicles were destroyed by arson.

Advice

Avoid the demonstration as a routine security precaution and to mitigate associated disruptions. Heed instructions from security services and leave the area at the first sign of a confrontation. Check for disruptions and allow extra time for travel in the affected areas.
