Canada: Heavy rain warnings issued for parts of southeastern Ontario and southern Quebec through Aug. 8

Heavy rain warnings issued for parts of Ontario and Quebec, Canada, through Aug. 8. Flooding and associated disruptions possible.

Warning

Event

Heavy rainfall is forecast across parts of southeastern Ontario and southern Quebec through Aug. 8. As of early Aug. 7, Environment Canada has issued red rain warnings for areas around Kingston and North Bay in Ontario and along the north bank of the St. Lawrence River in Quebec. Rainfall totals of 5-7.5 cm (2-3 inches) are expected in the warning areas, with localized higher amounts possible. Special weather statements for heavy rainfall are in place across the rest of the affected area, including Ottawa and Montreal. Rainfall totals of 2-5 cm (0.8-2 inches) are likely in these areas. Officials could update and possibly extend the coverage of weather alerts over the coming hours.

Sustained heavy rainfall could trigger flooding in low-lying areas and landslides on unstable slopes. The severe weather could contribute to transport disruptions throughout the region. Floodwaters and debris flows may render some bridges, rail networks, or roadways impassable, impacting overland travel in and around affected areas. Ponding on road surfaces could cause hazardous driving conditions on regional highways. Authorities could temporarily close some low-lying routes that become inundated by floodwaters.

Severe weather may trigger flight delays and cancellations at airports across the affected region. Flooding could block regional rail lines; freight and passenger train delays and cancellations are possible in areas with heavy rainfall and potential track inundation.

Advice

Monitor local media for updated emergency and weather information. Seek updated information on weather and road conditions before driving or routing shipments through areas where severe weather is forecast. Plan accordingly for potential delivery delays if routing shipments by truck through the affected area. Do not attempt to drive through flooded areas. Confirm flights. Charge battery-powered devices in the case of prolonged electricity outages.
