Power outages affected several parts of the country from approximately 08:20 Aug. 15. The outages impacted the Federal District, as well as at least another 15 states, including Amazonas, Piaui, Bahia, Acre, Amapa, Maranhao, Pernambuco, Goias, Minas Gerais, Ceara, Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Norte, Rio de Janeiro, Para, and Paraiba. Metro services in Sao Paulo and Belo Horizonte were disrupted. Some reports suggest that power has been restored in several locations; however, further disruptions to electricity are possible. The cause of the power outages is unclear.

Transport and business disruptions are likely in affected areas; businesses without backup generators could temporarily suspend operations. Mobile voice and internet service disruptions are possible. The electricity disruptions could also affect ATMs and fueling stations. The blackout could adversely affect security protocols, including alarm systems and electronic fences; opportunistic criminal activity could increase during the power outage.
