Mozambique: Medical Association announces nationwide strike from July 10

Mozambican Medical Association announces nationwide 21-day strike from July 10. Possible health services disruptions, associated protests.

Informational

Event

Doctors represented by the Mozambican Medical Association (AMM) have announced they will embark on a 21-day extendable nationwide strike from July 10 onwards. Their demands include higher wages and an end to the shortage of drugs and surgical materials. This announcement follows a series of strikes that began in November 2022, when negotiations with the government collapsed. The government had then successfully lobbied the AMM to cancel the strike over the health risks posed by the closing of medical facilities and had signed an agreement with medical professionals in February 2023. The AMM has ensured that emergency services will not be affected.

The strike could cause service delays in medical and health services. Protests could also materialize near hospitals and clinics. Security personnel will probably monitor sizeable gatherings if demonstrations are held; violence is unlikely.

Advice

Confirm medical appointments as a precaution. Plan for service delays; if possible, contact facilities in advance for information about wait times, which could vary. Exercise caution near any protests. Allow additional travel time near large rallies.
