Heightened security, violence reported amid opposition protests across Kenya July 7. Transport and business disruptions ongoing.

Increased security, protests, and sporadic clashes will likely continue across Kenya amid protests from the Azimio la Umoja one Kenya opposition coalition on July 7. Azimio's leader Raila Odinga called his supporters to march from Nairobi's Kamukunji Ground to Central Park. Clashes also erupted between protesters and security forces in Nairobi, Kisumu, and Mombasa on July 7. Businesses in major cities have reportedly closed amid the protests. Police forces have reportedly used tear gas to disperse protesters in various locations and have arrested several opposition politicians.

Security personnel will almost certainly remain stationed in urban centers across the country to monitor all protest sites through July 7 and may attempt to break up disruptive gatherings. Localized transport and business disruptions are likely to continue near protest sites. President Ruto's supporters may try to hold counterprotests near demonstration sites. Clashes between opposing groups of activists or between security forces and protesters are likely.

Context

The protests are a continuation of previous demonstrations on June 27 following the passage of the Finance Bill 2023 by the Members of the National Assembly. The Bill will take effect on July 1 by imposing new taxes and raising existing levies on products and services, including a 1.5 percent mandatory housing fund contribution. Azimio has called for a boycott of the new taxes and announced nationwide demonstrations starting July 7.

Avoid all protests or large gatherings due to the risk of associated violence, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities. Plan for delays near gathering areas. If violence occurs nearby, depart the area immediately.
