Thunderstorms are forecast across northeastern Italy through at least July 21. Strong wind gusts, lightning, and possible hail may accompany storms. Heavy downpours could trigger flooding in low-lying areas and landslides on unstable slopes. Strong winds may lead to power outages and property damage in affected areas.
As of July 19, officials have issued the following weather warnings across the country:
Orange thunderstorm warnings (the middle level on a three-tier scale): Emilia-Romagna, Friuli Venezia Giulia, Trentino Alto Adige, and Veneto regions.
Yellow strong wind warnings: Emilia-Romagna, Friuli Venezia Giulia, and Veneto regions.
Officials will likely update and extend the coverage of weather alerts over the coming days.
Hazardous Conditions
Sustained heavy rainfall could trigger flooding in low-lying communities near rivers, streams, and creeks. Flooding could block regional rail lines; freight cancellations are possible in areas with heavy rainfall and potential track blockages.
