Authorities are likely to maintain an enhanced security posture in Nuh District, Haryana State, until at least early August following violent clashes between two communities in the area July 31. The clashes, which came amid a Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) rally, left at least two people dead and 10 others wounded, including security personnel. Some individuals reportedly burned vehicles and threw stones amid the demonstration; police fired tear gas to forcibly disperse crowds.

The incident prompted several area businesses to suspend their operations; it was not immediately clear when business operations would normalize. More than 1,000 security personnel have been deployed to secure the district. Officials have suspended mobile internet services in Nuh District until Aug. 2 and imposed Section 144 of the Indian Penal Code until further notice. Under Section 144, public gatherings of five or more people are prohibited.

Officials may extend the existing measures or implement additional restrictions, including pedestrian checks and curfew rules, as a precaution or if further violence occurs. Additional demonstrations are possible despite the public gathering restrictions in effect. Potential gathering sites include police stations as well as prominent government buildings, public squares, and thoroughfares. Associated localized transport and business disruptions are likely. Further clashes between police and activists, as well as between members of rival groups, cannot be ruled out.
