Authorities are likely to maintain heightened security measures in Giessen, Hesse State, following clashes between protesters and police July 8. The clashes between participants of the Eritrea Festival, counterprotesters, and security forces resulted in police deploying tear gas and batons in an attempt to disperse the crowd. At least 22 police officers were injured and a number of protesters were arrested. Bus services in the city were suspended following the clashes and authorities advised individuals to avoid the city center.

Giessen is located approximately 45 km (28 miles) north of Frankfurt.
