Bangladesh, India: Authorities to temporarily suspend cross-border shipping services at Sonamasjid Land Port July 8

Officials to halt shipping services at Sonamasjid Land Port between Bangladesh's Chapainawabganj District and India's Malda District July 8.

Informational

Event

Officials will temporarily suspend cross-border shipping services at the Sonamasjid Land Port between Bangladesh's Chapainawabganj District and India's Malda District July 8. Authorities have scheduled the closure to facilitate the July 8 panchayat (rural) elections in West Bengal State, India. Security personnel will, however, permit individual travelers to cross the affected border area.

Officials will likely maintain an increased security presence along both sides of the border. In Malda District, authorities will probably increase security near polling stations, government buildings, and sites where any political gatherings materialize. The likely heightened security presence along the border and any political rallies may cause localized transport and business disruptions. Residual disruptions may occur even after the crossing reopens to cross-border shipping following the July 8 elections.

Advice

Reconfirm business appointments and travel bookings as well as the status of the Sonamasjid Land Port before travel. Consider using other border crossings July 8. Prepare for possible residual disruptions after July 8.
