Civil servants and members of the South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU) are currently protesting in Johannesburg, May 11, over the alleged underfunding of local municipalities. The protest is reportedly proceeding from Mary Fitzgerald Square through Lilian Ngoyi Street, through New Town and will finish at the Gauteng Premier's offices.

The march is currently causing transport disruptions in central Johannesburg; further disruptions are likely in the coming hours. Security forces gave been deployed to monitor the protest. Violence, although unlikely, is possible should protestors prove overly disruptive.
