Senegal: Further protests possible in Ngor area of Dakar following unrest May 9
Further protests possible in Ngor area of Dakar, Senegal, following unrest May 9.
Event
Further protests are possible in the Ngor neighborhood of Dakar over the coming days following unrest in the area May 9; clashes between security forces and protesters reportedly left at least two protesters dead and more wounded. The Senegalese Red Cross reported at least 16 injuries and that one of its ambulances was set on fire by unidentified attackers near the Ngor Diarama Hotel. Residents have frequently gathered since mid-April to oppose the construction of a new gendarmerie brigade in the neighborhood. President Macky Sall met with residents of Ngor on late May 9 to resolve the issue.
Given the ongoing political tensions in Senegal, heightened security and localized ground travel disruptions are likely near all protest sites, notably in Dakar. The potential for clashes with security forces is elevated.
Advice
Avoid all protests. Plan for localized transport disruptions near protest sites. Avoid discussing the political situation. Depart the area at the first sign of a confrontation. Heed the instructions of local authorities.
