Pakistan: Ongoing nationwide protests likely to continue through at least late May /update 3

Supporters of the Haq Do Tehreek (HDT) movement and other activist groups will likely continue their ongoing campaign of protests across Pakistan through at least late May. Organizers have expanded their protest activity from Gwadar into a nationwide campaign since May 1. The purpose of the action is to condemn the mid-January detention of the movement's leader, as well as several construction projects, due to perceived environmental concerns, among other things. In recent days, HDT supporters and the Jamaat-e-Islami party have held related rallies across the country, including Islamabad, Lahore, and Quetta.

Further demonstrations of varying types, including localized shutdown strikes, street marches, and blockades, are possible over the coming weeks. Potential rally sites include prominent government buildings, public squares, sports grounds, press clubs, and main thoroughfares. In Gwadar, typical demonstration venues include entrances and access roads to Gwadar Port, Gwadar International Airport (GWD), Gwadar East Bay Expressway, and Lala Hameed Chowk, as well as construction sites and markets. The HDT also has a history of targeting China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) projects in Gwadar; hence, protests could also occur near Chinese-owned facilities. Previous demonstrations over the same issues have attracted hundreds of participants.

Authorities will almost certainly monitor any rallies that materialize and may attempt to disperse overly disruptive crowds. Enhanced security measures, such as road closures or temporary restrictions on public movement, internet, and telecommunication services, cannot be ruled out in Gwadar. Clashes between activists and police are possible. Associated localized transport and business disruptions, as well as shipping delays, are possible.
