Myanmar: Further protests possible nationwide as of May 11 following Chinese Foreign Minister's visit

Further protests possible across Myanmar as of May 11 following Chinese Foreign Minister's visit. Disruptions, clashes possible.

Informational

Event

Additional protests are possible across Myanmar as of May 11 following Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang's visit May 2 to meet Myanmar's military government. Activists in multiple locations, including Yangon and Salingyi and Yinmabin townships in Sagaing Region, have reportedly held anti-China protests due to perceived Chinese support of the junta following the visit. Additionally, gatherings occurred in Letpadaung Village, Sagaing Region, where Chinese copper mines are located. The largest gatherings are likely in urban centers such as Yangon and Mandalay. Organizers may target Chinese-owned facilities, the Embassy of China in Yangon, public squares, and roadways. Several hundred people may participate in any demonstrations that materialize.

Authorities will almost certainly monitor any rallies and may attempt to disperse overly disruptive crowds. Enhanced security measures, including roadblocks and checkpoints, are likely at potential protest locations, such as the Embassy of China in Yangon and Chinese-owned facilities. Localized transport and business disruptions are probable during any demonstration. Clashes between protesters and security personnel may occur, particularly if demonstrators attempt to bypass security cordons or access government buildings. Provocations like vandalism and arson are possible.

Advice

Avoid all demonstrations due to possible violence. Monitor local developments, especially protest plans, closely, as organizers may not announce details in advance. Do not record any military-related movements or demonstrations due to the risk of arbitrary detention. If clashes break out, depart the area immediately. Allow additional travel time near protests. Remain polite and nonconfrontational if questioned by security personnel. Heed all official security instructions. Register and maintain contact with your diplomatic mission.
