Warning

Event

Residents of the Jua Kali and Kamas area of Kisumu are currently protesting across the city as of early May 9. The protest follows claims of the shooting and wounding of three residents by local security forces. Demonstrators have been seen marching near the Aga Khan Hospital roundabout and protesting near the Central Police Station; there have been reports of minor acts of arson and roadblocks. Security forces have reportedly made use of tear gas and shot live rounds into the air to disperse the crowd.

Further unrest is likely in the coming hours; demonstrators may march along or block roadways, prompting localized transport disruptions. Security forces will likely deploy to protest hotspots to remove blockades and disperse protesters. The potential for clashes with security forces is elevated.

Advice

Avoid all protests. Do not drive through any road blockades. Abide by all directives issued by security forces. If violence breaks out, leave the area immediately, and take shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building.
