Heatwave conditions are forecast to persist across Bihar and West Bengal states in eastern India through at least May 11. Temperatures of 40-42 C (104-108 F) are ongoing across parts of the affected region and are expected to continue over the coming days. As of May 9, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued orange (the middle level on a three-tier scale) heatwave warnings for Gangetic West Bengal and yellow heatwave warnings for Bihar and sub-Himilayan West Bengal May 9-11. Authorities will likely amend advisories as weather conditions change over the coming days.

The extended period of oppressive heat and dry conditions may produce ideal circumstances for wildfire growth throughout the region.
