Guatemala: March planned in Guatemala City by unionized teachers May 4

Unionized teachers to march in Guatemala City, Guatemala, May 4, to oppose an education reform bill.

Unionized teachers, affiliated with the Education Workers Union of Guatemala (Sindicato de Trabajadores de la Educacion de Guatemala, STEG), plan to hold a march through several areas of Guatemala City on May 4, to oppose a bill that would amend the retirement plan of public teachers. Demonstrators intend to gather at Plaza Obelisco, starting at 08:00, and from there, they intend to march through Avenida Reforma, Ruta 6, 7ma Avenida, and reach downtown, where the protest will divide in two, one going to the Congress, and the other to the Presidential Palace. A few thousand people may participate in the demonstrations.

The demonstrations are likely to cause transport and business disruptions throughout Guatemala City. Heightened security is likely especially outside government buildings.
