Warning

Event

Authorities in Berlin have discovered an unexploded World War II-era bomb in the city's Marienfelde area May 11. The explosive device was reportedly found near the Kaufland parking lot on Buckower Chaussee during construction work. Officials have indicated that crews will begin the bomb-disposal operation late May 11, and have accordingly demarcated a 500-meter (0.3-mile) evacuation area around bomb's location. The bomb-disposal operation has also prompted authorities to cancel S-Bahn rail service at the Buckower Chaussee station on the S2 line from around 20:00; authorities are not offering replacement bus service. Officials did not immediately give an estimate as to when the operation would start or how long it would last.

Authorities will almost certainly maintain an increased security presence in the area for the duration of the operation. The security perimeter and associated road closures will prompt localized disruptions to business and transport.

Advice

Avoid the incident site until authorities give the all-clear. Check for transport disruptions before beginning journeys and allow extra time for travel in the Marienfelde area of Berlin late May 11-early May 12.
