Informational

Event

Pro-Palestinian activists plan to protest in multiple cities May 13 to mark Al-Nakba Day, which commemorates the expulsion of thousands of Palestinian Arabs during the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948. Organizers have announced protests at the following locations and times:

  • Adelaide: Grange to Glenelg along the Adelaide Coast 08:00

  • Brisbane: Brisbane Square 13:00

  • Canberra: Garema Place 13:00

  • Darwin: Legislative Assembly of the Northern Territory 11:00

  • Hobart: Parliament House 11:00

  • Melbourne: State Library Victoria 13:00

  • Perth: Yagan Square 12:00

  • Sydney: Sydney Town Hall 13:00

Gatherings are possible in other locations, especially at government buildings as well as public squares and parks. Dozens to a few hundred people could participate in any demonstration.

Authorities will likely monitor protests and may try to disperse disruptive gatherings. While the protests will likely remain peaceful, minor isolated skirmishes cannot be ruled out. Activists may march along and block roadways, prompting localized transport and business disruptions.

Advice

Avoid protests due to the potential for clashes. Plan for localized transport disruptions. Use alternative routes to circumvent protest locations. If violence occurs nearby, immediately depart the area and seek shelter at a safe, non-government building. Heed all official security and transport advisories.
