Nepal: Taxi drivers' strike affecting the Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM) area in Kathmandu, April 4

Taxi drivers serving the airport area on strike in Kathmandu, Nepal, April 4. Transport disruptions likely; protests, skirmishes possible.

Informational

Event

Unionized taxi drivers serving Kathmandu's Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM) have begun a strike the morning of April 4. Participants are denouncing a parking fee hike. It is unclear when the action will end; taxi services in other parts of the city are unaffected. Commuters are likely to seek alternative means of transport to and from KTM, leading to traffic congestion and possible shortages. Organizers may call off the strike at short notice if negotiations with officials succeed. Although flight disruptions are unlikely, ground travel delays are probable.

Strike participants may also stage demonstrations. Likely protest locations include KTM, government buildings, public squares, and major roadways. Protesters may block roadways with vehicles as well as march along roadways, causing localized transport disruptions. Authorities will likely monitor any protests that break out and may try to disperse gatherings that are especially disruptive. Clashes between protesters and police are possible. Striking drivers may also attack non-participating taxis and/or other private hire vehicles serving KTM.

Advice

Confirm transport reservations during the strike and seek alternative transport if necessary. Allow additional travel time to and from KTM. Avoid protests and navigating roadblocks due to possible clashes. If violence breaks out, leave the area immediately. Follow all security and traffic advisories.
