The blaze started at around 06:10 and has spread to at least four other buildings, including the Annexco Market; the cause of the incident is unclear. There are no immediate reports of casualties. Affected shopkeepers reportedly stormed the nearby Fire Service Department office at approximately 09:30, injuring at least four firefighters as well as engaging in arson and vandalism. Additional violence and related protests may occur in the coming hours.

Demonstrations are possible in the impact area, as well as at popular gathering sites like the police headquarters, other government buildings, major intersections, and public squares. Police may attempt to forcibly disperse unruly mobs, potentially causing clashes.

Advice

Avoid the area until authorities give the all-clear. Seek alternative routes and allow additional travel time to nearby destinations. Consider remaining indoors as smoke is heavy, especially if you suffer from a respiratory illness such as asthma, or conditions that lead to increased risk from smoke exposure. Eye irritation is possible; flush irritated eyes with copious amounts of clean water. Heed all official instructions including evacuation orders, security advisories, and traffic restrictions. Avoid all protests due to possible violence.
