Heightened security, violence reported amid opposition protests across Kenya March 20. Transport and business disruptions ongoing.

Heightened security has been deployed in urban centers across the country, including Nairobi, Kisumu, and Mombasa, amid protests from the Azimio la Umoja one Kenya opposition coalition on March 20. Security forces were reportedly deployed near government buildings, including State Houses, stadiums, prominent squares, and major thoroughfares. Businesses in Nairobi's and Kisumu's Central Business Districts have reportedly closed amid the protests. Acts of violence, including vandalism and looting, have been reported. Police forces have reportedly used tear gas to disperse protesters in various locations and have arrested several opposition politicians.

Security personnel will almost certainly remain stationed in urban centers across the country to monitor all protest sites through March 20 and may attempt to break up disruptive gatherings. Localized transport and business disruptions are likely to continue near protest sites. President Ruto's supporters may try to hold counterprotests near demonstration sites. Clashes between opposing groups of activists or between security forces and protesters are likely.

Context

Raila Odinga, leader of the opposition coalition, had called for mass demonstrations in response to the government's failure to address their concerns within the 14 days ultimatum issued on Feb. 22, which includes an increase in the cost of living and a demand that President William Ruto resign. Odinga's supporters have held similar demonstrations over the past weeks.
