Protests likely across the Philippines, especially in Metro Manila, Dec. 10 to mark International Human Rights Day. Disruptions possible.

Informational

Event

Activists from various civic organizations will likely hold demonstrations across the Philippines Dec. 10 to mark International Human Rights Day and oppose alleged human rights violations by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr's administration. The human rights group Karapatan announced it would gather at Liwasang Bonifacio in Metro Manila at 09:00 before marching toward Mendiola Bridge from 11:00. Other possible protest venues in Metro Manila include the Bantayog Memorial and Malacanang Palace. Activists may also hold smaller gatherings in other urban areas, including Cebu and Davao cities; protests will likely occur outside government buildings and at popular demonstration sites, such as public squares and parks. Hundreds of people may participate in any demonstrations.

Authorities will almost certainly bolster security, including setting up security cordons, at any protest site. Localized transport and business disruptions may occur, particularly if there is a high turnout or if protesters occupy nearby streets. Clashes are possible if police disperse any gatherings forcibly or if activists attempt to breach security barriers. Police may arrest protesters if gatherings are especially disruptive, potentially prompting clashes.

Advice

Avoid any demonstrations due to possible clashes. If violence breaks out nearby, leave the area immediately and take shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Follow all security personnel instructions. Allow additional travel time near protest sites.
