Peru: President dissolves Congress and implements a 22:00-04:00 curfew

Peruvian president Pedro Castillo announces the dissolution of Congress and the implementation of a 22:00-0:440 curfew. Protests likely.

Critical

Event

Shortly before Congress could debate a motion that would remove President Pedro Castillo from office, Castillo announced that he was dissolving Congress, establishing a new emergency government, and implementing a 22:00-04:00 curfew nationwide. The move is almost certain to create a major constitutional crisis, with Congress likely to refuse to recognize the move and vote to remove Castillo from office and Castillo refusing to leave the presidency.

Authorities will almost certainly deploy an increased security presence near prominent government buildings. Major demonstrations by both Castillo's supporters and his detractors are likely, and clashes are possible, especially if police attempt to forcibly disperse protesters. The demonstrations and curfew are likely to cause significant transport and business disruptions.

Advice

Avoid all protests as a precaution. If violence occurs, immediately leave the area and seek shelter in a nongovernmental building. Remain indoors during curfew hours. Heed the instructions of security personnel.
