Burkina Faso: Activists to protest in central Ouagadougou Dec. 9-10

Activists to stage anti-French protests in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, Dec. 9-10. Avoid all demonstrations.

Warning

Event

Several activist organizations plan to demonstrate in central Ouagadougou Dec. 9-10. The Collective of Pan-African Leaders and allied groups, including those affiliated with the Mouvement M30 Naaba Wobgo, will rally at Place de la Nation starting at 08:00 Dec. 9. The purpose of the gathering is to denounce the French military presence and alleged foreign influence in the affairs of the state, as well as to show support the transitional government, among other issues. On Dec. 10, a little-known group called the African Black Defense League plans to stage a protest at Place de la Nation to condemn imperialism; organizers have as yet released no specific start time or other details. While the Dec. 9 event will likely be well attended, it remains unclear how many participants the Dec. 10 demonstration may draw. Spontaneous demonstrations may occur in other areas of Ouagadougou without notice.

Heightened security and localized business and transport disruptions are likely near the two rallies or any other protests that may materialize. Clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out. Authorities may impose further security measures if protests continue, including restrictions on movement, checkpoints, and road closures. Such measures could go into effect or change with little to no warning.

Context

Similar protests have been reported in recent weeks. Participants demand, among other things, the withdrawal of French military forces from the country and increased cooperation with Russia. During a related demonstration Nov. 18, protesters gathered in front of the French Embassy throwing debris for several hours before security forces fired tear gas to disperse the crowd.

Advice

Strictly avoid all demonstrations and heed the instructions of local authorities. Monitor local media and consult with trusted sources for updated information on any protests or enhanced security measures. Keep away from areas where crowds appear to be forming or security personnel are deploying. If clashes erupt nearby, exit the area immediately; if unable to do so, take refuge in a secure nongovernmental building. Maintain contact with diplomatic representations.
