Informational

Event

Truck drivers with the Associations and Guilds of Collective and Heavy Transportation of Guatemala (Asociaciones y Gremiales del Transporte Colectivo y Pesado de Guatemala) have announced an indefinite blockade at several points in Quetzaltenango and Quiche Departments starting 06:00 Nov. 14 to denounce high prices for fuel and other essential goods. The truckers intend to pressure the government to alleviate the prices of essential goods.

Disruptions to transit are almost certain; disruptions to business operations dependent on trucking goods are likely in the area. Blockades could spread to other regions of Guatemala. Heightened security is likely near blockade locations. Clashes are possible if police attempt to force protesting truckers to disperse. Blockades could last through Nov. 18.

Quetzeltenango Department is approximately 107 km (66 miles) west of Guatemala City. Quiche Department is approximately 116 km (72 miles) northwest of Guatemala City.

Advice

Plan on disruptions to transit and freight trucking in the area. Do not attempt to bypass blockades; wait for police to remove them. Comply with directives from authorities. Avoid protest sites as a precaution. Confirm appointments.
