Burkina Faso: US Embassy issues a demonstrations alert for Ouagadougou 08:00 Nov. 18

US Embassy issues a demonstrations alert for Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, 08:00 Nov. 18. Avoid all demonstrations.

Warning

Event

The US Embassy in Ouagadougou issued a security alert Nov. 17, warning that demonstrations are planned in the city starting at 08:00 Nov. 18. The alert advises its citizens abroad that protests are likely to take place at several locations, including Place de la Revolution, the French Embassy, the "Grand Marche" market, and Camp Bangre. The purpose of the protests remains unclear. However, the demonstrations may press for the withdrawal of French military forces from the country.

Heightened security and localized business and transport disruptions are likely near any protests that may materialize. Clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out. Demonstrations may occur in other areas of Ouagadougou without notice. Maintain vigilance as protests can quickly escalate. Authorities may impose further security measures if protests continue, including restrictions on movement, checkpoints, and road closures. Such measures could go into effect or change with little to no warning.

Advice

Strictly avoid all demonstrations and heed the instructions of local authorities. Monitor local media and consult with trusted sources for updated information on any protests or enhanced security measures. Keep away from areas where crowds appear to be forming or security personnel are deploying. If clashes erupt nearby, exit the area immediately; if unable to do so, take refuge in a secure nongovernmental building. Maintain contact with diplomatic representations.
