Officials reopen section of State Highway 2 near Waiotahe Beach on North Island, New Zealand, as of Oct. 26.

Informational

Event

Authorities have reopened a closed portion of State Highway 2 (SH2) near Waiotahe Beach in Bay of Plenty, North Island, as of Oct. 26. Officials closed the highway between Waiotahi Valley Back and Paerata Ridge roads due to a large landslide. The closure affected transport between Tauranga and Gisborne, forcing drivers to use a detour with priority for essential freight. Meanwhile, oversized vehicles and those weighing more than 50,000 tonnes (55,000 tons) could only use State Highway 5. Normal traffic flow is occurring as of Oct. 26.

The affected area was approximately 95 km (59 miles) southeast of Tauranga.
