Mexico: Cyclists to march in downtown Tijuana Oct. 28 to demand improved road security

Cyclists to march in downtown Tijuana, Mexico, Oct. 28 to demand improved road security. Heightened disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

Cyclists affiliated with the Urban Cyclist Workshop (Taller del Ciclista Urbano, TCU) plan to march in downtown Tijuana Oct. 28. The purpose of the action is to denounce the recent death of Colombian cyclist Diana Carolina Pelaez Rodriguez, who was run over while riding her bike, and to demand improved road security for cyclists. Participants will gather at 19:00 at The Ride Co. Cafe and march to Cardenas High School Organizers via Paseo de Los Heroes before ending at the Tijuana Cultural Center (Cecut).

Although the action should remain largely peaceful, authorities will almost certainly deploy an increased police presence nearby as a precaution. Clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out, especially if authorities attempt to forcibly disperse crowds. Localized transport and business disruptions are likely.

Advice

Avoid the demonstration as a precaution. If violence occurs, immediately leave the area and seek shelter in a safe, nongovernmental building. Seek alternative routes to circumvent related transport disruptions and allow additional time to reach destinations. Do not attempt to navigate around protester-erected roadblocks; allow police to dismantle them before proceeding. Heed the instructions of security personnel.
