Warning

Event

Money exchange workers are threatening to block the Maitree Express railway running between Dhaka and Kolkata in Gede, West Bengal, Oct. 29. Participants intend to denounce the central government’s decision to not issue tourist visas to Bangladeshi nationals entering through the Gede border crossing between India and Bangladesh, which has made it harder for Bangladeshis to cross the border to work. Dozens to a few hundred people may participate in the protest. Protesters may call off the action at short notice if the government satisfies their demands. Rail disruptions are likely if organizers carry out the protest.

Authorities will likely monitor the protest and may try to disperse the gathering if it is especially disruptive. Clashes between police and protesters are possible. The protest may prompt localized traffic disruptions as well as rail disruptions.

Advice

Avoid the protest due to possible clashes. If violence breaks out, leave the area immediately. Follow all security personnel instructions. Allow additional travel time near the gathering. Confirm Maitree Express rail services in advance.
