Demonstrators disrupt transport throughout Mexico, March 22; heightened security, transport, and business disruptions likely.

Informational

Event

Activists affiliated with the Mexican Alliance of Organized Transport Workers (Alianza Mexicana de Organizacion de Transportistas, AMOTAC) are launching protests in various locations throughout the country March 22. The purpose of the actions is to demand federal authorities improve road safety. The protests have led to traffic disruptions and blocked roads in multiple locations, including Autopista Mexico-Toluca, Autopista Mexico-Puebla, Autopista Mexico-Pachuca, and Autopista a Zapotlanejo.

Localized transport and business disruptions are likely due to the various demonstrations and associated security measures. While the gatherings have remained largely peaceful, clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out, especially if authorities attempt to forcibly disperse crowds.

Advice

Avoid all protests as a precaution. If violence occurs, immediately leave the area and seek shelter in a non-government building. Seek alternate routes. Do not attempt to drive through protester roadblocks; wait for police to dismantle them instead before proceeding. Allow additional time to reach destinations near potential protest locations. Heed the instructions of security personnel.
