Angola: Doctors began an indefinite nationwide strike March 21

Doctors began an indefinite nationwide strike in Angola March 21. Protests possible, confirm medical appointments.

Informational

Event

The National Union of Angolan Doctors (SINMEA) began an indefinite nationwide strike March 21. The labor action is to demand improved working conditions and salaries. The strike comes after a week-long strike by doctors in December. SINMEA stated that a minimum of service will be provided at emergency rooms and intensive care units. While organizers have not announced any planned demonstrations, they remain possible and may occur in the vicinity of hospitals nationwide and outside the Ministry of Health in Luanda.

Security forces will almost certainly deploy to monitor any protests. Disruptions are possible near protest locations.

Advice

Confirm all appointments at medical facilities for the duration of the strike. Be prepared for delays at hospitals; call in advance, if possible, as conditions will likely vary by facility. Allow additional time for travel near potential gathering sites, including public hospitals and government buildings. Avoid all protests as a standard precaution.
