Eswatini: Activists call for protest near the High Court in Mbabane Dec. 20

Activists may protest near the High Court of Eswatini in Mbabane Dec. 20; heightened security measures likely.

Warning

Event

Activists have called for a gathering at the High Court of Eswatini in Mbabane Dec. 20. The purpose is to show support for two members of Parliament, who have their bail hearings scheduled then. Members of Parliament Mduduzi Bacede Mabuza and Mthandeni Dube were arrested in relation to the anti-government protests that occurred in June and July. It is unclear at what time participants intend to gather.

Police are likely to maintain a heightened security presence in the vicinity of the court Dec. 20. Short-term significant but highly localized disruptions are likely near all gatherings. Any street protests that form have the potential to be highly disruptive. Widespread violence is unlikely, but cannot be discounted entirely as previous politically motivated protests have degenerated into clashes.

Advice

Avoid protests and rallies due to possible violence. If clashes break out, leave the area immediately and take shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Follow all security personnel instructions. Monitor local news for updates on protests and road conditions, as party leaders may not announce actions in advance. Allow additional travel time near gatherings.
