Angola suspends flight bans from seven African countries as of Dec. 20 following COVID-19 variant concerns; domestic measures unchanged.

Critical

Event

Authorities in Angola have reopened borders to seven African countries as of Dec. 20, following restrictions that were implemented on Dec. 1 to reduce the spread of the Omicron COVID-19 variant. Flights with Botswana, Eswatini, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, and Zimbabwe have resumed.

The country's domestic and international restrictions remain in place.

Domestic Measures

  • Most businesses are allowed to operate with health protocols in place and restrictions on capacity.

  • Restaurants and supermarkets are open to the public 06:00-22:00. Trough Jan. 5, restaurant hours are adapted to 06:00-00:00.

  • Individuals are required to present either proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test result to enter select places, including public institutions, restaurants, educational establishments, and cultural (cinemas and museums) and sporting spaces.

  • There is no curfew in place, though the government recommends that individuals stay indoors 00:00-05:00.

  • Domestic flights are ongoing; a negative serological COVID-19 test obtained 72 hours before travel is required.

  • Facemasks are required in public areas, including in public transport.

  • Effective Dec. 15, restaurants, commercial centers, casinos, and other entertainment venues may open until 00:00. Family gatherings will no longer be limited to 15 people, and social gatherings will be permitted, with a capacity limit of 50 percent of the space used. The requirement to demonstrate proof of vaccination or a recent negative COVID-19 test result will remain.

International Measures

  • All land borders remain closed to non-commercial traffic until further notice.

  • Limited international air travel is ongoing. Travelers coming from certain countries deemed high-risk locations may be prohibited from entering Angola, except for Angolan nationals.

  • All travelers entering the country must complete a Travel Registration Form (FRV) up to 72 hours before the travel date. To obtain the form, click here.

  • All travelers entering the country require a negative PCR COVID-19 test taken no more than 72 hours before departure. Air passengers may be subject to a rapid COVID-19 test immediately on disembarkation.

  • All arrivals on tourist visas are required to quarantine for seven days. Passports will be held until a negative result is produced.

  • All travelers leaving the country must present a negative COVID-19 test taken no longer than 72 hours before departure.

Those caught in breach of COVID-19 measures and restrictions will be subject to fines. Authorities may amend existing regulations or introduce new restrictions with little notice depending on local and international disease activity in the coming weeks.
