Event

Militants ambushed a group of Malian soldiers near the village of Bodio, between Bankass and Bandiagara in Mopti Region, Oct. 6. Military officials said nine soldiers were killed and 11 injured in the fighting. However, local officials claim as many as 16 soldier died during the attack.

Increased security is likely in the area over the coming days. Further attacks on security personnel are are also likely in the Mopti region.

Bodio is located about 440 km (273 miles) southwest of Gao.

Context

Insecurity is prevalent across much of Mali. Islamist militants or affiliated groups conduct attacks regularly. Despite continued security operations in affected areas, armed groups continue to demonstrate a capability to strike civilians and security forces. The security situation is further undermined by local rivalries and sporadic communal violence and lawlessness, and banditry.
