Officials have tightened security in Kawardha, Chhattisgarh State, as of Oct. 6 following clashes between opposing groups in recent days. Fighting broke out between two groups Oct. 3 regarding the removal of religious flags from Lohara Chowk, injuring several people. Additional violence broke out Oct. 5 when Hindu protesters held a protest march and attacked property belonging to the Muslim community; police used force to bring the situation under control. Multiple security personnel were injured. At least 5,000 security personnel have deployed to Kawardha and have closed all public facilities and venues. Section 144 orders have also been imposed on the city; Section 144 bans gatherings of more than five people. Media sources also indicate officials are imposing a curfew in Kawardha, though it is unclear what times the curfew is in effect. Officials have also suspended internet services in Kawardha’s Kabirdham district and neighboring Bemetara and Rajnandgaon districts.

Authorities will likely maintain heightened security in the coming days. Officials may close roadways near sensitive sites, such as government buildings, public squares, and other possible protest venues. Security forces will likely try to disperse protests.
