Togo: Opposition group calls for demonstrations nationwide through July 18

Opposition group calls for demonstrations across Togo through July 18. Increased security presence, transport disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

The Dynamique Monseigneur Kpodzro (DMK) political opposition group and other associated groups have called for demonstrations nationwide through July 18. The demonstrations are to protest the rising costs of living, including the recent levying of a tax on motor vehicles and the increase in fuel prices. Organizers have not revealed the start time for the events or locations and it does not appear that the events have taken place as of July 12.

An increased security presence is likely to be deployed across Lome and other major urban areas through July 18. Clashes between security forces and protesters are also possible if demonstrations go ahead. Ground travel and business disruptions are likely near all protest sites.

Advice

Avoid all demonstrations and concentrations of security personnel across Togo through July 18. Monitor for updates on protest start times and possible routes. Plan for road travel delays near all demonstrations.
