Peru: Protests related to disputed election outcome likely through mid-July; demonstration in Lima, July 10 /update 1

Protests related to the disputed outcome of the June 6 run-off presidential election between Pedro Castillo (Peru Libre party) and Keiko Fujimori (Fuerza Popular party) are likely to persist in Lima and possibly other urban centers through mid-July. Castillo received just over 50-percent of the vote; however, Fujimori has disputed the outcome and cited voter fraud. The National Jury of Elections (Jurado Nacional de Elecciones, JNE) is currently reviewing appeals and has indicated that its work will likely conclude July 15.

Fujimori supporters plan to protest in Lima, July 10. They plan to gather at Avenida de la Peruanidad from 13:00 before marching through various streets before congregating at the Paseo de Los Heroes Navales from 17:00. Further protests by supporters of both candidates in the coming days are likely to occur near prominent government buildings, such as the Congreso de la Republica, and major plazas, and JNE offices.

Security forces will almost certainly deploy to monitor related gatherings. Should the outcome of the vote be delayed or if candidates continue to cite fraud after results are confirmed, the frequency of protests could increase. Clashes between protesters and security forces or between rival political party supporters remain possible.
