Palestinian Territories: Activists to protest in central Ramallah from 17:00 July 11

Activists to protest in central Ramallah, Palestinian Territories, from 17:00 July 11. Heightened security measures are likely.

Warning

Event

Activists plan to protest at Manarah Square in central Ramallah from 17:00 July 11. The purpose of the action is to denounce the June 24 death of prominent activist Nizar Banat. Additional unannounced protests are possible elsewhere in the West Bank, including Hebron and Nablus.

Heightened security measures are likely in central Ramallah through at least late July 11. Clashes between demonstrators and security forces remain possible. Localized transport disruptions are likely near demonstration sites.

Context

Banat was a prominent advocate of free speech, widely known for his outspoken criticism of the PA for its alleged corruption and its security coordination with the Israeli military in the West Bank. PA security forces detained Banat early June 24, and he died shortly thereafter. Critics of the PA have referred to Banat's death as an assassination.

Advice

Avoid all protests. Plan for increased security and localized transport disruptions near demonstration sites. Confirm the availability of transport and allow additional time to reach destinations in Ramallah. Out of an abundance of caution, vacate the area at the first sign of confrontation.
