Unidentified assailants kidnap local leader and his family members in Kajuru, Kaduna State, Nigeria, early July 11.

Warning

Event

Armed assailants kidnapped Alhaji Alhassan Adamu, the Chief of Kajuru, and at least 10 of his family members from their palace in Kajuru Local Government Area (LGA), Kaduna State, early July 11. The identity and motivation of the kidnappers was not immediately announced, although officials have referred to the assailants as "bandits."

Security forces have deployed to the area to search for the kidnapping victims and investigate the incident. Increased security measures may prompt localized ground transport and business disruptions.

Context

Kidnapping poses a high threat in Nigeria for both locals and foreign nationals. Most kidnappings in Nigeria are financially motivated and conducted by criminal groups of varying levels of sophistication. In the past, militant groups, such as Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province, have been involved in attacks on educational facilities in northern Nigeria, including in Kaduna State. Victims of ideologically motivated kidnappings face a higher threat of death and may experience longer captivity times.

Advice

Exercise a high degree of vigilance due to the threat of kidnapping in Nigeria. Do not discuss plans and routes publicly. If operating in the area in the long term, vary routes and times of travel and ensure the use of secure transport. Make allowances for possible localized disruptions in and around Kajuru LGA.
