Chad: Opposition groups to march in central N'Djamena July 16

Opposition organizations to stage protest march in N'Djamena, Chad, July 16. Tight security, transportation disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

Several political opposition and civil society groups operating under the umbrella of the Wakit Tama Movement plan to stage a march in central N'Djamena, July 16. The purpose of the demonstration is to condemn Chad's transitional military council (CMT) and demand the return to constitutional government. It remains unclear what time the event will begin; however, Chadian authorities have issued a permit for the march to take place from the Hamama Roundabout to the January 15 Palace.

Authorities will almost certainly maintain an elevated security posture near the demonstration. Increased security measures, such as roadblocks and additional checkpoints, are likely in major urban areas and will probably prompt localized transport disruptions. Clashes between protesters and security forces are possible due to heightened political tensions.

Context

Chad's political and security environments have degraded in the past three months following the death of longtime President Idriss Deby Itno. The appointment of the late president's son, Mahamat Deby Itno, as the head of the transitional military council (CMT), along with the suspension of the constitution and the National Assembly, sparked nationwide protests on April 27, during which at least five activists died in clashes with security forces. Additional protests have occurred since then. Anti-government civil society groups and opposition parties are seeking to increase the pressure on the CMT to usher in a democratic transition.

Advice

Avoid areas along the announced march route in N'Djamena, July 16. Seek updated information on route and destination security and road conditions before conducting ground movements. Leave the area immediately at the first sign of any confrontation. Strictly heed the instructions of local security personnel.
