Brazil: Activists plan anti-government protests in several cities, July 13

Activists plan anti-government demonstrations in several cities in Brazil, July 13. Disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

Several activist and civil society organizations plan to demonstrate in cities across Brazil, July 13. The purpose of the action is to protest the government's handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, the privatization of state companies, and a proposed bill on land demarcation perceived as detrimental to indigenous communities.

The calls for protests on July 13 follow a series of demonstrations in recent weeks demanding the impeachment of President Jair Bolsonaro, which are being staged in preparation for a larger rally scheduled to take place July 24.

Organizers have announced the following events:

  • Sao Paulo: Municipal Theatre from 17:00

  • Rio de Janeiro: Candelaria Church from 17:00

  • Brasilia: Rodoviaria de Brasilia from 16:00

  • Belo Horizonte: Praca Afonso Arinos from 17:00

  • Curitiba: Praca dos Santos Andrade from 18:00

  • Florianopolis: Florianopolis Cathedral from 17:00

  • Fortaleza: Praca da Bandeira from 15:30

  • Goiania: Praca do Bandeirante from 09:00

  • Porto Alegre: City Hall from 18:00

Related protests are also likely elsewhere across the country. Participation will probably vary significantly depending on location. The demonstrations in Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo, and Brasilia will almost certainly be well-attended.

Ground transport disruptions are likely in the vicinity of protests. Police will almost certainly deploy to monitor protests, especially those with high turnouts. Clashes are possible if police attempt to forcibly disperse protesters. Counterprotests are also possible, and clashes may occur between groups of Bolsonaro's supporters and detractors.

Advice

Avoid all protests as a standard security precaution. If violence breaks out, leave the area immediately and seek shelter in the nearest secure location. Allow extra time for travel near known demonstration sites and in downtown areas of major cities July 13.
