Palestinian Territories: Anti-government demonstrations likely in the West Bank through at least June 30

Additional protests likely in the West Bank, Palestinian Territories, through at least June 30 following death of prominent activist.

Warning

Event

Anti-government demonstrations are likely to continue across the West Bank through at least June 30. Protests have been ongoing since the recent death of Nizar Banat, a prominent Palestinian activist and critic of the Palestinian Authority (PA), during his arrest on June 24. Demonstrations have been reported in numerous locations, including Ramallah, Nablus, Hebron, and East Jerusalem. More than 20 people were injured amid clashes between protesters and security forces in Ramallah late June 26; security forces reportedly employed riot-control measures, including batons and tear gas, to forcibly disperse demonstrators.

Heightened security measures are likely in PA-administered areas through at least June 30. Further clashes between demonstrators and security forces remain possible. Localized transport disruptions are likely near demonstration sites.

Context

Banat was a prominent advocate of free speech, widely known for his outspoken criticism of the PA for its alleged corruption and its security coordination with the Israeli military in the West Bank. PA security forces detained Banat early June 24, and he died shortly thereafter. Critics of the PA have referred to Banat's death as an assassination.

Advice

Avoid all announced or proposed protest actions due to the potential for violence. Exercise caution near likely protest locations. Monitor local media for protest activity, as organizers may not announce plans in advance. Confirm the availability of transport and allow additional time to reach destinations. Plan for increased security and localized transport disruptions near demonstrations. Follow all police instructions.
