Pakistan: MQM-P to stage protest march in central Karachi July 3

MQM-P plans protest march in Karachi, Pakistan, July 3. Increased security, transport disruptions likely. Clashes possible.

Warning

Event

The Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P), an opposition political party, plans to hold a protest march from Hasan Square to the Karachi Press Club July 3. The purpose of the action is to denounce the alleged failures and corruption of the Sindh government. Organizers have not announced the time at which the demonstration will begin, though it will likely start in the morning and continue through at least the early afternoon. Hundreds of people will likely participate, as the MQM-P is well supported in Karachi. Organizers may hold additional protests in the coming weeks.

Security personnel will almost certainly monitor the procession and may attempt to enforce COVID-19 gathering restrictions. Clashes between security forces and demonstrators are possible, especially if police forcibly attempt to disperse protesters. Localized transport disruptions are likely on roadways along the march route, which will probably include sections of University Road and New M.A. Jinnah Road. Officials may divert traffic from affected thoroughfares.

Advice

Avoid the march due to possible violence. If clashes break out, leave the area immediately. Follow all instructions of security personnel. Allow additional to reach destinations near the likely march route on July 3.
