New Zealand: Bus drivers in Wellington threaten additional labor actions from May 28 amid labor dispute

Bus drivers threaten to conduct labor actions in Wellington, New Zealand, from May 28. Confirm transport arrangements.

Informational

Event

Tramways Union bus drivers in Wellington have threatened to carry out labor actions from May 28 amid an ongoing collective labor agreement negotiation. The union gave operator NZ Bus the deadline after turning down a proposal from the company May 20. The union has not announced any specific actions, but drivers could go on strike, refuse to accept fares, or take other actions. Unless averted, any strike will most likely impact Wellington City Transport and Cityline-operated bus lines, which NZ Bus supports.

Increased demand for taxis and available bus and rail services is likely if a strike occurs. Increased crowding is also likely on alternative public transport. Employees may seek to work from home. The wider use of private vehicles is also possible, potentially exacerbating traffic congestion.

Context

Tramways Union and NZ Bus have negotiated a collective agreement for more than eight months. The company offered drivers a lump sum bonus, but drivers almost unanimously rejected the offer. Workers unanimously supported a no-confidence vote for NZ Bus amid the increasingly tense negotiations. Drivers remain concerned over alleged attempts to alter enhanced pay for late-night and weekend shifts and limits on the number of hours drivers can work without extra compensation. NZ Bus is offering a higher base salary for drivers and has encouraged the union to return to negotiations. Tramways Union gave NZ Bus until May 28 to provide a better offer.

Advice

Confirm bus schedules. Allow additional travel time due to likely increased traffic congestion and higher demand for rail service.
