Myanmar: Groups opposed to military junta warn civilians of additional bombing attacks in urban areas May 28

Groups opposed to military junta warn civilians of further bombing attacks in urban areas of Myanmar May 28. Avoid likely targets.

Warning

Event

As of May 28, groups opposed to the military junta in Myanmar have issued warnings of additional bombing attacks against security forces and suspected "informers." Messages posted on social media have specifically warned of increased threats in urban areas, advising civilians to avoid soldiers and police and limit their exposure to restaurants and local fairs. Groups have also threatened attacks on individuals cooperating with junta officials.

Security forces will almost certainly maintain increased security measures near sensitive locations. Heightened security is especially likely near government buildings and officials' residences. Roadblocks are likely in some areas. Increased security measures will probably prompt localized transport disruptions. Armed clashes are also possible.

Context

More than 300 explosions have occurred in Myanmar following the Feb. 1 coup. Reported bombings have increased in frequency and intensity following deadly crackdowns on civilian protesters. Most bombings have targeted security forces, along with individuals and organizations supporting the junta. Some targeted assassinations and arson attacks have also occurred in urban areas.

Security forces have engaged in armed clashes with ethnic armed militias and "self-defense units" in several regions, especially in parts of the country primarily inhabited by ethnic minority groups. At least several hundred individuals opposed to the coup, including some prominent politicians, have fled to areas effectively controlled by armed ethnic groups; such groups have long-standing conflicts with the military. The Karen National Union (KNU) has reportedly given former protesters paramilitary training to turn the pro-democracy activists into a guerilla fighting force aligned with the group.

Advice

Exercise extreme caution. Avoid government buildings, security installations, and large concentrations of police and soldiers when possible. Heed all security personnel instructions. Monitor local developments closely. Carry identification documents and be prepared to show them to security personnel.
