Warning

Event

Activists are planning to stage demonstrations at several embassies in Addis Ababa at 16:00 May 21 to denounce perceived foreign interference in Ethiopia's domestic affairs, particularly regarding the ongoing military operation in Tigray Region, the construction of the Grand Ethiopia Renaissance Dam (GERD), and the country's upcoming general election. Participants may gather at or near the following diplomatic facilities:

  • US embassy

  • UK embassy

  • Egyptian embassy

  • Sudanese embassy

  • EU Delegation Office

The US Embassy in Addis Ababa issued a related security alert on May 20 warning of possible protests and announcing that, out of an abundance of caution, it will consequently cancel its consular services on May 21. US diplomatic officials have advised individuals to avoid the vicinity of the embassy.

Embassy warnings may be updated or amended over the period leading up to the demonstrations. Local security forces may increase security patrols near vulnerable sites. Police may try to disperse any rallies that materialize, possibly resulting in clashes between protesters and security forces. Localized transport disruptions are possible, especially if demonstrators march along roadways.

Advice

Exercise caution in Addis Ababa, particularly near foreign diplomatic facilities. Maintain contact with your diplomatic representation. Heed the directives of the security forces.
