A magnitude-6.0 earthquake occurred in the Mediterranean Sea, north of Algeria, at around 01:04 March 18. The epicenter was about 21 km (13 miles) north northeast of Bejaia. The tremor occurred at a depth of about 10 km (6miles) and likely produced strong-to-moderate shaking at the epicenter. Moderate-to-light shaking likely took place in northern parts of Algeria, including Algiers, Setif, Constantine, and Annaba There have been no initial reports of damage or casualties due to the earthquake; however, it could take several hours until authorities can conduct comprehensive damage assessments. Aftershocks are possible. The incident has not prompted any tsunami advisories.

Officials may temporarily shut down transportation infrastructure in the tremor zone to check for damage. Minor disruptions could occur during shutdowns, but service will likely resume quickly if no damage is found. Utility outages are possible, particularly in coastal areas near the earthquake's epicenter.
