Pakistan: Religious procession to occur in Karachi 1600 Feb. 26

Religious procession planned in Karachi, Pakistan, 1600 Feb. 26. Localized transport disruptions likely; violence possible.

Warning

Event

Shi'a Muslims plan to hold a procession from Ghafoor Chamber to Mehfil-e-Shah-e-Khurasan in Karachi from 1600 Feb. 26. Organizers intend to mark Youm-e-Wiladat Hazrat Ali, which celebrates the birth of Hazrat Ali. The march will move along several roadways, including Aga Khan and M.A. Jinnah roads. Participation in the procession will likely range between several hundred and a few thousand people.

Shi'a religious events carry an elevated threat of attacks by Sunni extremists. Previous attacks, including bombings, on Shi'a processions and gatherings have been attributed to extremists affiliated with other sects of Islam. Security personnel will almost certainly heighten security along and near the procession route. Police may try to break up the march if it moves off of the announced route or to enforce COVID-19 gathering restrictions. Localized transport disruptions are likely near the procession, as police will divert traffic from the area.

Advice

Avoid the procession due to possible violence. If violence breaks out, leave the area immediately. Follow all security personnel instructions. Allow additional travel time in the area.
