Three-wheeled taxi drivers launch indefinite strike in Kano, Nigeria, Feb. 22. Protests, sporadic clashes possible.

Warning

Event

Drivers of three-wheeled motor taxis, known locally as "keke-NAPEP", have launched an indefinite strike in the city of Kano, Feb. 22. The purpose of the labor action is to protest a new transportation tax imposed by the Kano State Roads and Traffic Agency (KAROTA). The work-stoppage has reportedly prompted significant public transport disruptions in the city. Moreover, local law enforcement officials have reported sporadic clashes between demonstrators and security forces at strike-related protests in some parts of Kano; an unspecified number of arrests have taken place during such incidents.

A heightened security presence and transportation disruptions will likely continue in Kano for the duration of the strike. The absence of tricycle taxi services could prompt crowding and delays on other forms of public transport. Additional protests and associated clashes between striking tricycle operators and local security forces are possible.

Advice

Plan accordingly for public transport disruptions; allow extra time for travel if operating in Kano. Avoid any protests that may materialize, as well as any locations where security personnel appear to be deploying. Heed the instructions of local authorities. Confirm local business appointments.
